The aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79) isthe new so-called supercarrier to join the ranks ofthe USNavy, The ship belongs to the Gerald R. Fordclass which currently has two ships.
The USS JFK was launched on 29 October 2019 andhas since been in the systems installation phaseandtogether with the Gerald R. Ford will be the two topUS supercarriers as they are called by the US Navy. With a displacement of 100,000 tons and a length of337 metres, they are the largest and most capable oftheirclass.
At the same time another US aircraft carrier to USSGeorge H. W. Bush (CVN-77), the latest to join theUS fleet, but belonging to the previous Nimitz class, launched and then recovered a Lockheed Martin F-35C Lightning IIfighter aircraft for the first time on12 December, while over 100 pre-docking cycleswere conducted throughoutthe week.
The launch and recovery of the F-35Cs from the USsupercarrier marks an important step for the shipitself as itcan now fully utilize the Navy‘s newfighter.
