The new rockets were developed by the state research organisation DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation).
The new rockets achieve a maximum range of 90 kilometres. The Pinaka launcher entered service in 1998 with Mk. 1 version rockets with a maximum range of 48 km. Mk. 1 Enhanced) have a maximum range of 60 km, while a development programme for the Mk. 3 version (guided, 120 km maximum range) is underway.
