The tests of the 214 mm Pinaka Mk. 2 ER (Extended Range) rockets have been completed and the Indian Ministry of Defence has announced that the production of these rockets can now begin.

The new rockets were developed by the state research organisation DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation).

The new rockets achieve a maximum range of 90 kilometres. The Pinaka launcher entered service in 1998 with Mk. 1 version rockets with a maximum range of 48 km. Mk. 1 Enhanced) have a maximum range of 60 km, while a development programme for the Mk. 3 version (guided, 120 km maximum range) is underway.
