According to statements by Andrei Yelchaninov, Vice-Chairman of the Russian Military-Industrial Commission, to Interfax, Russian Su-57 fighter aircraft will be equipped with new engines and supersonic weapons from 2027 onwards.
Currently, 25 of the 76 aircraft to be acquired by the Russian Air Force are in production. The first tests of the Su-57 with the new engines are expected to be completed in 2024, followed by a second series of tests until 2026.
In the meantime the aircraft will be certified to use supersonic weapons, such as the in-service Kh-47M2 Kinzhal (on the MiG-31). The supersonic weapons will be integrated into the internal suspension points so as not to encumber the aircraft‘s radar track. The Su-57 was certified by the Russian Air Force in late 2020, and by 2028 it should have received all 76 aircraft of the original order.
